How electric hoists work
An electric hoist uses a powered motor to drive a lifting mechanism, typically via a chain or wire rope. The motor engages a gearbox which controls lifting speed and torque, allowing heavy loads to be raised and lowered steadily. Most electric hoists are operated using a pendant control or remote handset, giving the operator clear visibility and precise control during operation.
Safety features are a key part of electric hoist design. These often include upper and lower limit switches, overload protection and automatic braking systems that hold the load securely when power is removed. These features help protect both operators and equipment during daily use.
Types of electric hoists
Electric hoists are available in several configurations to suit different applications. Electric chain hoists are widely used for general lifting tasks and are well suited to workshops, factories and maintenance areas. They are compact, durable and ideal for moderate lifting heights.
Electric wire rope hoists are typically chosen for heavier loads or longer lifting distances. They are commonly used in industrial settings where higher duty cycles and smoother operation are required. Both types can be fixed in place or mounted to trolleys for horizontal movement along beams.
