Workstation Crane Definition
A workstation crane is a lightweight, modular overhead crane system designed for repetitive lifting and load positioning within a fixed or semi-fixed work area. Unlike heavy-duty bridge cranes built into a building’s primary structure, workstation cranes are self-contained systems that can be ceiling-mounted or installed on their own freestanding support columns.
They are designed primarily for ergonomics and ease of movement. The goal is not raw lifting capacity but precision, low rolling resistance and minimal operator effort, so that loads can be positioned accurately without fatigue, even when the same operation is performed many times per hour.
Workstation cranes are widely used in manufacturing cells, assembly lines, packaging areas, machine shops, automotive facilities, meat processing and food production, stone and tile fabrication and anywhere a defined area needs reliable, repeatable overhead handling.
How Does a Workstation Crane Work?
A workstation bridge crane operates on two parallel runways that define the north-south axis of the crane’s coverage area. A bridge beam spans between the runways and travels along them, providing east-west movement. A hoist and trolley are mounted on the bridge, providing vertical lift and allowing additional travel along the bridge itself.
Together, these three axes of movement, runway travel, bridge travel and hoist travel, give the operator coverage over the full rectangular footprint of the system. The hoist can lift and lower a load anywhere within that rectangle.
The enclosed track design used in systems like Metreel’s MET-TRACK range is a key feature. The wheels run inside a profiled track, keeping the running surface clean and debris-free and maintaining precise wheel alignment. This is what gives workstation cranes their characteristically low rolling resistance, allowing one person to push or pull substantial loads with little effort.
When electrical power is needed at the hoist, this is typically supplied either via a festoon cable system or, in higher-specification installations, via an enclosed conductor system mounted within the runway and bridge profiles.
Types of Workstation Crane
There are three main configurations of workstation cranes, each suited to different facility constraints and coverage requirements.
Ceiling-Mounted Workstation Bridge Crane
The runways are suspended from the building structure using hanger rods or tube hangers attached to overhead trusses or beams. This configuration maximises floor space and is well suited to facilities with good overhead structural support and sufficient headroom. Multiple bridges can share a single pair of runways, allowing more than one operator to work independently within the same area.
Freestanding Workstation Bridge Crane
The runways are supported on columns fixed to the floor, creating a self-contained structure that does not load the building. This is the preferred option when the overhead structure is not suitable for crane loads, when the installation needs to be relocatable, or when the crane needs to be installed independently of an existing overhead bridge crane system. Columns are typically fixed to a standard reinforced concrete floor using anchor bolts.
Workstation Jib Crane
Rather than covering a rectangular area, a workstation jib crane provides coverage over a circular or semi-circular arc. The hoist is mounted on a horizontal boom that rotates around a central mast or wall-mounted bracket. Jib cranes are commonly used at individual workstations where a bridge crane would be disproportionate, or to supplement a larger overhead system by providing localised lifting in a bay or corner area.
Workstation Crane vs Overhead Crane: What Is The Difference?
The terms workstation crane and overhead crane are sometimes used interchangeably, but they refer to different classes of equipment.
An overhead crane, in its traditional sense, is a heavy-duty bridge crane built into the structure of a building. The runways are mounted high on the building walls or on dedicated crane gantry structures and the crane is designed for high-capacity, high-frequency or precision industrial lifting, often running on steel rails at the top of the building. These systems can have capacities ranging from a few tonnes up to several hundred tonnes and are designed for demanding process environments such as steel mills, foundries, shipyards and heavy fabrication shops.
A workstation crane is a lighter-duty system operating at a lower height within the facility, with capacities typically up to around 2,000 kg. It is designed for ergonomic handling rather than heavy process lifting. The two types often coexist in the same facility, with the overhead crane handling heavy lifts across the full building span and workstation cranes providing precise, repetitive handling within individual production cells.
