What Is Proof Load Testing?

Proof load testing is a controlled test in which a piece of lifting equipment or an accessory is loaded beyond its rated capacity, under strict conditions, to confirm it can safely handle the load it is designed for. It is carried out before equipment enters service and at defined intervals afterwards, and it forms part of the wider inspection and certification process that keeps lifting operations safe.

Why Is Proof Load Testing Required?

In the UK, lifting equipment is covered by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations, commonly known as LOLER.

Proof load testing requirements under LOLER exist to confirm that equipment is strong enough for its intended use before it is put into service, and that it continues to perform safely as it ages and wears. Without a valid proof load test, equipment cannot be certified as fit for use, regardless of how new or well maintained it appears.

During a proof load test, the equipment is loaded to a specified percentage above its rated capacity, typically in the region of 25 to 50 percent depending on the equipment type and applicable standard. The load is applied gradually and held for a set period while the equipment is inspected for deformation, cracking or other signs of weakness. If the equipment passes without damage, it is certified as fit for use at its rated capacity.

Proof Load Testing Certification

A successful proof load test results in a certificate confirming the date of testing, the load applied and the outcome. This certificate should be kept alongside other lifting equipment records and produced during any inspection or audit.

Proof load certification is separate from, but closely linked to, the safe working load marked on the equipment, since the proof load confirms the margin of safety built above that rated figure.

Proof Load Testing Requirements in the UK

UK proof load testing requirements vary depending on the type of equipment and the standard it falls under, but the underlying principle is consistent. Equipment must be tested before first use, after any significant repair or modification, and at scheduled intervals as part of ongoing thorough examination. It is worth understanding the difference between WLL and SWL as part of this process, since both figures are referenced during testing and certification.

Proof load testing applies to most lifting equipment and accessories, including hoists, balancers and winches, overhead cranes, chains, slings, shackles and lifting hooks.
